When You Are Denied Admission to UF Online
Admission to the University of Florida is highly competitive and each application is thoroughly reviewed by the Office of Admissions. There are various reasons why prospective students may not be admitted to UF Online and recommendations for next steps vary based on your academic background.
Your application was reviewed holistically by the Office of Admissions for a comprehensive set of academic and non-academic factors. Admission requirements for each respective level are listed on the UF Online website; however, minimums may not be sufficient for admission.
Other Paths to UF Online Enrollment
If you are not admitted to UF Online at these levels, you may be eligible to apply as an upper division transfer applicant in the future. Prospective applicants who have earned 60 or more college credits after high school graduation, including Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree holders, are upper division transfer applicants. Be sure to review UF Online’s upper division transfer page for additional information on next steps.
Florida residents are encouraged to complete an Associate of Arts (A.A.) degree at a Florida state college, as it ensures all UF general education requirements are met and aligns with state transfer agreements. A list of all Florida state colleges is available through the Florida Department of Education.
Non-Florida residents may also complete 60 transferrable credits at any institution accredited by agencies or associations recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. We encourage enrollment at a Florida College System institution to ensure maximum efficiency in the transfer process.

Minimum Transfer Requirements:
- At least 60 semester hours of transferable credit
- A 2.0 GPA overall and a 2.0 GPA at the last school attended
Major-Specific Transfer Requirements (found on the degree page for your intended major):
- An overall GPA requirement
- A list of prerequisite courses
- A minimum prerequisite GPA

Missing prerequisites
If you were denied because you were missing specific courses, you will need to take those courses before re-applying to UF Online. Be sure to enroll at an accredited institution recognized by the University of Florida for any future coursework. To find online courses offered by Florida institutions, you can use the Course Search tool on the Florida Shines website. You can also explore the Flexible Learning Program for available online University of Florida non-degree courses that can be applied toward a UF degree.
Unmet GPA Requirements
- Before enrolling in coursework, consider if the GPA requirements are attainable. Please note that for most majors, all prior attempts at a competitive admissions coursework are factored into the prerequisite GPA calculation.
- If the GPA requirements are attainable, you may need to enroll or retake additional coursework to improve your GPA. We encourage enrollment at a Florida College System institution to ensure maximum efficiency in the transfer process.
- If the GPA requirements cannot be achieved, consider earning your bachelor’s degree at another institution and applying to one of our excellent graduate or professional programs in the future.
- If you have received an Associate of Arts (AA) degree from a Florida College System institution, please consider applying to one or more of the other 11 institutions that comprise Florida’s State University System if you have not already done so. Admissions processes and degree programs at each institution are found on the individual university’s websites. For your convenience, the State University System of Florida website provides links to the undergraduate admission websites for each institution.

Other Paths to UF Online Enrollment
If specific requirements for readmission were listed in your denial letter, you should only reapply to UF Online once you have completed the requirements for your intended major.

UF Online Appeals Process
Appeals can only be considered for the same major in the term for which you applied. If you wish to be considered for a different major, then a new UF Online application will be required. When you appeal, you are asking the Committee to make an exception in the case of your application. Every appeal will receive a fair review. However, exceptions, by definition, are rare and require substantial evidence or reasoning to warrant approval. Some appeals are approved; most are not. The committee’s decision is final.
Freshmen
Possible reasons or considerations for an appeal and the required supporting documentation:
One or more of your grades from grades 9 through 11 has changed resulting in a higher GPA.
Supporting documentation:
- Appeal Form
- Official high school and/or dual enrollment transcript(s)
A medical condition, illness or surgery that negatively impacted your academic performance.
Supporting documentation:
- Appeal Form
- Documentation or letter from health care provider outlining the severity and duration of the medical condition and how that impacted the student. Detailed medical documentation of the condition (e.g. lab or test results) is not required or reviewed.
Extenuating life circumstances that negatively impacted academics and/or participation in extracurricular activities that were not disclosed or fully explained in the original application.
Supporting documentation:
- Appeal Form
- Optional: letter of explanation corroborating circumstances from school counselor (not a general recommendation letter)
A documented disability (physical, sensory, psychological, developmental, learning, neurological or other impairments) that impacts your opportunities to equitably engage in the learning environment and/or limits your participation in extracurricular activities.
Supporting documentation:
- Appeal Form
- Disability documentation, which may include psychoeducational evaluations, educational or medical records, reports and assessments created by health care providers, school psychologists, or teachers. The documentation should be inclusive of information from a licensed professional outlining the disability’s impact on learning.
Critical information not included in your original application.
- Supporting documentation:
- Appeal Form
- Appeals written by someone other than the applicant.
- Test scores received after the decision was released.
- Senior grades.
- Additional activities, honors, or awards earned after applying.
- Interviews or meeting with admissions staff in person, virtually, or on the phone.
- A strong desire to attend the University of Florida.

Transfer
We appreciate your desire to transfer to the University of Florida. The admissions process at our university is highly competitive.
Your UF Online transfer application was reviewed to ensure it meets the following university minimum standards:
- A minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA
- A minimum 2.0 GPA at your most recently attended institution ’
If your admission letter lists one of these criteria and you have documented extenuating circumstances that impacted your academic performance, you may be eligible to appeal. To discuss the appeals process, please contact the UF Online OneStop at (352) 294-3290 or by email.
If you have been denied admission by the college, first look at your admission letter to see if there are ways to improve your competitiveness should you decide to apply again. If you feel you have extenuating circumstances that affected your previous grades or new information to provide then you should contact the UF Online OneStop to initiate the appeals process. If eligible, an appeal form will be added to your Application Status Page. You will need to submit:
- The completed appeal form
- Supporting documentation
- A letter of support from the college/major to which you applied
